ABOUT US

We are a committee of upholsterers from across the UK who have come together, inspired by the tireless work of award-winning upholsterer Delyth Fetherston-Dilke. Formerly a film lawyer for Warner Bros., Delyth now serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF).

Along her journey as an upholsterer, she began investigating the toxic chemicals commonly used in our trade and speaking openly about her concerns. As her profile grew - through conversations with fellow upholsterers and invitations to address expert panels - many of us recognised our own experiences in her findings. Long-held worries about daily chemical exposure and its possible effects on our families, our customers, and the wider environment were finally being brought into the open.

In 2022, those concerns were turned into action when an open letter to the Government was shared on Instagram. Within just two weeks, 1,000 upholsterers had added their names. A year later, that number had grown to 5,793, all responding to the Government’s consultation on the 1988 Furniture and Furnishings Fire Regulations. The strength of that response reflects how widely these issues are felt across our trade.

Since then, Delyth has authored an article for the Government’s Clean Air website and contributed to a new UK scientific consensus paper exploring how fire safety can be achieved without compromising environmental or human health.

While Delyth has been a leading voice in this movement, and her talks have helped surface conversations many of us had been having quietly for years in our workshops, this is no longer the effort of one person. Her work continues to inform and energise us, but our campaign is powered by a growing, nationwide community of professionals who care deeply about both fire safety and human health.

This website has been created by us - a collective of upholsterers - and has been shaped and informed by Delyth’s work, research, and guidance to ensure the information and studies it presents are accurate and robust. We believe in fire safety by design rather than reliance on toxic chemical treatments, and we want to see the UK move toward the European model of safer, healthier homes.

Together, we are committed to shaping a future for our craft that protects lives, livelihoods, and the spaces people call home.

WE CALL UPON THE UK GOVERNMENT TO:

STOP

The requirement for the 'open flame' test which is impossible to pass without Chemical Flame Retardants

SWITCH

To harmonise our furniture fire safety regulations with the European General Product Safety Regulations

where a  'smouldering cigarette' test is used

We'll keep you informed on developments of fire safety
