HOW CAN YOU HELP

URGENT Deadline 23rd June 2026

PUBLIC CONSULTATION

The Office for Product and Safety standards has just launched a public consultation on amended plans to
reform the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988. This consultation follows the policy paper published in January 2025 and reflects the outputs of our stakeholder engagement and a comprehensive review of our evidence base. The Government is now seeking your views
on these proposed reforms.

The consultation will be open for 12 weeks, closing on 23 June 2026 and the consultation document is available to view here: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/product-regulation-fire-
safety-of-domestic-upholstered-furniture
Following the consultation period, the Government will review the submissions received and publish a response that will set out a timeline
and a roadmap to implementing the reforms.

PLEASE RESPOND TO THE CONSULTATION HERE

3

Tell your GP

If you experience any commonly reported health issues - from itchy skin and weeping eyes to breathing problems, chest pain, exhaustion, autoimmune conditions, or fertility concerns - PLEASE make sure you tell your doctor that you are an upholsterer and clearly explain your level of exposure.

Creating a medical record is vital. A documented paper trail helps demonstrate the real human harm being caused.

WE CALL UPON THE UK GOVERNMENT TO:

STOP

The requirement for the 'open flame' test which is almost impossible to pass without Chemical Flame Retardants

SWITCH

To harmonise our furniture fire safety regulations with the European General Product Safety Regulations

where a  'smouldering cigarette' test is used

We'll keep you informed on developments of fire safety
